Over the past few months I have been looking high and low for another wedding photographer to join the team.  We have been swamped with requests the last few months.  It turns out in 2010 a lot of people are getting married.  We’ll I’m pleased to announce that we have found Chris.  He is a very talented wedding photo journalist.  For his day job he shoots freelance for Reuters and has been published in The New York Times, Toronto Star and regularly appears in the Ottawa Citizen.  Chris’s style is very journalistic, he shoots with mostly available light, often using prime lenses.  Here is a link to his wedding portfolio.  Anyone interested in booking Chris to shoot their wedding, just send us a message and we will arrange a meeting.

Below is a shot I took last summer at the bride Marcail’s house.

The Sala San Marco

Flower Girls and The Ring Bearer

Always a fun place for receptions is the Sala San Marco in Ottawa.  This hall has a great vibe to it.  For wedding photographers in Ottawa you won’t be disappointed shooting here.  This show was taken when the flower girls, ring bearer made their grand entrance right before the bride and groom.  I decided to us a wide angle lens to capture the surroundings.  Because the kids were moving I increased the flash, shutter speed and iso a bit and opened the aperture in order to freeze their motion and still allow in the background light.  The great thing about this place is the high white ceilings.  They allow photographers to bounce light very easily and get great results.

Thanks Ali I had a great time at your wedding!!

The Experimental Farm

The Groomsmen

The Bride

The experimental farm is a paradise wedding photographers in Ottawa.  There is tons of options and you can always find good light there.  When I meet with bride and grooms I always go over the options for the formal photo session.  Some brides prefer more of a city scape feel with lots of modern architecture others want nature.  Flowers, trees, and lots of green.  If that is the preference I always recommend the experimental farm as an option.  There is just so much to choose from.  And the huge trees always give great light in the case of a harsh sunny day.

The pictures above were both taken at Ali’s wedding last summer.  The first shot with the groomsmen was taken with all natural light.  (it was a cloudy day).  I shot at 200mm and f2.8 to get the shallow depth of field.  I really wanted to separate the groom from the groomsmen, and turn the plants into a pleasing blur.  For post processing I filled in the shadows a bit.  I changed the hue of the greens in order to created a nice

The second photo was shot with studio lighting mixed with the available light.  I had the studio light pretty far away from the bride in order to keep the light out of the photo.  The studio light was mainly used to bring the bride out of the shadows in really draw attention to her.  I felt the picture looked better in black and white so I switched it up.  Then after I recovered the highlights and filled in the shadows and sharpened the pic.

Ottawa Wedding Reviews!

January 8, 2010

Every bride wants to know the best vendors in the Ottawa bridal industry.  Their are so many options out there that it will make your head spin.  I was just at the Ottawa Wedding Palace Bridal Show helping my friend set up her table, and I realized that so many options must make it hard for a bride to decide who to choose.  Well thought I would post a couple resources for brides and grooms to check out.

The first place to check is the Wedding Bells Forums for tons of reviews on wedding services.  Although they do take down negative comments about vendors you can see the ones who’ve made people happy.  Another place I have discovered is a blog called  Ottawa Wedding Reviews.  Definitely check this blog out when searching for vendors.

Now specifically when searching for a photographer I definitely recommend meeting with all the photographers that you are interested in.  Ask lots of questions!  If you need some questions to ask here is a link to a standard list of questions to ask your prospective wedding photographers:  Questions You MUST ask your Wedding Photographers.   And here is another document that can help you ask well:  Equipment your Wedding Photographer MUST have.  Both documents can be downloaded and printed right off my website.

The Ring Shot

The Ring Shot

A standard shot that I find most challenging is the wedding ring photo.  Because in macro photography its very hard to hand hold the camera and get the desired area in focus.  The only way I have found to hand hold the camera for the ring shot is to close the aperture and to increase the flash power in order to get a larger depth of field.  This is a shot of the ring’s from Marcail’s wedding rings, taken here in Ottawa, Ontario.

Outdoor wedding in Ottawa Ontario

This is a photo I took at Alison’s wedding last summer here in Ottawa.  This was at Stanley’s Maple Farm, great place to get married.  Although the weather was rough this summer in Ottawa we got lucky this day.  It was a beautiful day for an outdoor wedding.  I used a mix of studio lighting along with direct sunlight to light the shot.  I feel what really gives this photo character is the color.  I altered the color in Photoshop creating a sepia but still maintained the same tonal values.  I find sepia works great with wedding photos because it creates an antique, old photo look that works great with wedding pics.

Thanks everyone for tuning in.  Again if you are having an Ottawa wedding and looking for a place to get married.  Stanley’s Maple Farm is a great place.

Getting in the Limo

Getting in the Limo

This photo is from Luc and Monica’s wedding this summer here in Ottawa, Ontario.  The light was really bad for this photo.  The sun was directly overhead and was very harsh.  I had no choice but to over power the sun with direct flash.  Without that flash the overhead sun would have created the “raccoon eye” effect.  Thanks for tuning into my blog!  I wish you all a happy New Year!!
